Flea & Tick Control

Importance of Flea & Tick Control Services

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) there was a reported 71,346 tick born illnesses in 2022 throughout the United States. Also, a most recent study showed that 1 in 7 dogs have fleas.

Since fleas reproduce rapidly, an infestation can happen quickly if not treated. With ticks, one bite can change someone’s life forever. The moment you suspect you have a problem, you will want to look for a pest control company. Accu-Pest Exterminating specializes in flea & tick services. Give us a call so we can begin treatment before an infestation takes over.

What's the difference between the two?

Fleas are much smaller than ticks which can make them difficult to spot. They are tiny insects with brown bodies and attach themselves to animals to feed on their blood.

Flea bites are typically much smaller and may appear in a line or small cluster of red bumps.

Fleas can jump extremely high, finding all ways to jump on your pets. Ticks cannot jump but they crawl.

Ticks are much bigger and have 8 legs instead of 6. They live predominantly outdoors and latch onto their host as they brush past. Ticks can be red, brown, yellow, gray, or black. As they eat, a tick’s body will grow significantly in size. Once they’re satisfied, a tick will unlatch and wait for the next host.

Tick bites often have a bullseye appearance since they attach themselves to the host by digging their head into the host’s skin.

Signs of a flea problem

You have probably already seen them in your house which is why you are here. But here are some signs to look for incase you are not sure.

If you notice your pet seeming more irritated, look for these other indications that you may have a problem:

  • Pets licking and biting their fur excessively
  • Bites around the ankles and feet of human members of your household
  • Blackish brown dots that appear and then disappear on your socks as you walk along a carpeted surface
  • Black specks, which are waste products, fall off your pets as you brush them

Flea Fact #1

They can jump more than 100 times its length (vertically up to 7 inches and horizontally 13 inches). That’s equivalent to an adult human jumping 250 feet vertically and 450 feet horizontally.

Most infestations come from newly developed fleas from the pet’s environment.

Flea Fact #2

During a infestation, treating your pet isn’t enough. You have to treat the environment too—that’s where the eggs and pupae are hiding.  There are eggs and pupae in the carpet, in between the floor boards, and even in your car, if you have a habit of taking your dog on rides.

The only way to truly get rid of a infestation is calling a exterminator.

Flea Fact #3

A female can lay up to 50 eggs every single day. Typically, it’s more like 20 eggs but the possibility of it being more is there. That means that a single prolific female can cause a major infestation in less than two months.

This is why it’s super important to jump on treating the problem the moment you suspect an issue.

Ticks in Lafayette, La

It’s vital to keep ticks away from your home or business as they can spread some life changing diseases. Ticks are more active during warmer months like late spring and summer. The thing about ticks is that even if you don’t have pets, they are worrisome for humans. Especially if you have little kids that play outside.

Ticks wait in bushes and branches waiting for a mammal to walk by them. When they do, they grab on to them with their front legs. Once attached, they begin feeding on blood.

Accu-Pest Exterminating’s tick removal process is designed to quickly and effectively eliminate ticks from your home or business. When you call, we follow these steps to make certain that you have a tick-free environment:

  • Thorough inspection of your property for signs of a tick infestation.
  • Targeted pest control treatments with environmentally friendly methods.
  • Custom pest management plans to prevent ticks in the future.

Flea & Tick FAQs

Both are highly mobile pests and can be carried easily between locations or within an apartment building. Identifying the source of the infestation and taking the proper steps to ensure a re-infestation does not occur can take multiple service visits.

There are a number of ways to tell if you’re dealing with an infestation. First, you might notice your pets scratching or chewing on themselves excessively. This is particularly common in dogs, and even just a handful of fleas can lead to compulsive scratching in dogs with an allergy. Additionally, you’ll often find small, red, itchy bite marks on your extremities, particularly around your ankles and lower legs. Finally, you can often detect fleas themselves with the naked eye. They are fairly easy to spot when fully grown.

An infestation can be a major issue. For one thing, bites are extremely unpleasant to deal with: they often lead to significant amounts of itching and irritation, and sensitive individuals may experience allergic reactions. Additionally, though, fleas are known to carry and transmit a number of diseases. That’s why it’s always best to contact a pest control professional in order to deal with an infestation.

While treatment products are available to homeowners to control fleas, many are ineffective. For example, bombs often drive fleas deeper into their hiding spots and leave unwanted chemicals on many surfaces. And as we have already mentioned, these products cannot kill eggs, so homeowners often find their problem returns after any eggs mature into adults.

If your problem is linked to an infested animal living on your property, including any type of wildlife, then these types of products used indoors will be ineffective at addressing the source of your issue. We will apply effective treatments to ensure your home is flea-free and provide you with specialized tips to prevent a future infestation.

Yes, ticks can be very dangerous. Because they latch onto their host and suck blood over a long period of time, ticks can transmit a number of diseases, including:

– Lyme disease
– Anaplasmosis
– Babesiosis
– Colorado tick fever
– Ehrlichiosis
– Powassan virus
– Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
– Rickettsiosis
– Tularemia

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), ticks survive the winter by living underground. But as soon as it gets warmer than 46° F (which can happen suddenly here in Louisiana), they become more active again and start looking for hosts to feed on – both animals and humans. Our treatments in the winter will catch and exterminate ticks before they become a problem in the warmer months.
